Two major turmeric hauls hidden in chilli imports seized by customs

Colombo, May 4 (Daily Mirror) - In two separate operations, today, officers of the Customs Prevention Division seized large stocks of undeclared turmeric that had been concealed among imported dried chillies.

In the first incident, Customs officials uncovered 6,600 kilograms of dried turmeric pieces hidden within a consignment of dried chillies imported from India by a businessman based in the Kandy area.

In a similar raid carried out on the same day, officers detected a further 7,110 kilograms of dried turmeric concealed in another chilli shipment imported from India by a businessman from the Badulla area.

Authorities said investigations are ongoing into both incidents, while legal action is expected against those responsible.
