Suspect shot while attempting to escape Police custody

Colombo, May 3 (Daily Mirror) - Police opened fire on a suspect today (May 3) after he attempted to escape while being prepared for transport to the Galgamuwa Magistrate's Court. 

The confrontation began as officers were loading several suspects, held on drug-related charges, into a police jeep. Two suspects, who were handcuffed together at the time, suddenly broke away and attempted to flee the premises.

According to police reports, the duo managed to run approximately 75 meters from the station gate before officers intervened. To prevent the escape, police discharged their weapons, striking one of the suspects in the lower leg, below the knee.

The injured suspect, identified as a 32-year-old resident of Gojaragama, Galgamuwa, was initially rushed to the Galgamuwa Base Hospital. He was subsequently transferred to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital for further treatment under police guard.
The suspect had been arrested in connection with narcotics offences.
