Colombo, May 18 (Daily Mirror) - A group of university students who had occupied the disputed Malwana residence since May 1 have agreed to vacate the premises following discussions with Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya today (18).

The decision was reached after successful talks held between the Prime Minister and the students regarding the future of the property.

Members of the Inter-University Students’ Federation (IUSF) had staged a protest at the Malwana estate on May 14, calling for the property — allegedly linked to former Minister Basil Rajapaksa — to be handed over for public use, including for universities facing severe space shortages.

The Malwana estate, which spans nearly 15 acres, has previously been described as an “ownerless property” and has remained at the centre of public controversy for several years.
