Student activists with several others arrested for engaging in protests

Police have arrested a group student activists including the convener of the Inter-University Student’s Federation Wasantha Mudalige and the Chairman of the Sri Jayewardenepura University Students' Federation Amila Sandeepa in connection with the series of protests during the last few days.

It was reported that Wasantha Mudalige was arrested by the Thalangama Police while he was on his way after attending to a television programme.

The Maharagama Police Chief Inspector was seriously injured during a scuffle that broke out during the protest on August 3 near Parliament.

Police Spokesman SDIG Ajith Rohana said that the  drivers of three vans that transported people from various parts of the country to take part in the protest were also arrested by for violating travel restrictions.

He said it was reported that people were transported to Colombo from Medirigiriya, Tissamaharama and Peradeniya areas.

The arrests were made by the Thalangama Police and they will be produced in court today.

In addition to the above, several other people were also arrested by the Cinnamon Garden Police for engaging in a protest at the Zoysa Roundabout in Colombo.

They were arrested for violating quarantine rules and regulations.
