There is a possibility of one getting infected with the coronavirus even after the first dose of the vaccine, said Chief Epidemiologist Dr Sudath Samaraweera.
He told media that the vaccine could provide protection to a recipient within the period of 12 weeks after the first dose.
“Although one could be infected with the virus after the first dose, it has potential to protect the person from getting severe symptoms and succumbing to the virus,” he pointed out.
Meanwhile, he said sudden spike of COVID-19 cases in large number at present was mainly due to the New Year festivals and picnics especially to Nuwara Eliya and Kataragama.
“A considerable number of cases was also reported following the spread of the virus in carnivals and other festivals.
“A spate of COVID-19 cases is also connected to the patients detected in previous clusters,” he added. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
