The tournament co-hosts had to contend with skipper Chamari Athapaththu being forced off the pitch against England in the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup.
Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu was stretchered off the pitch during the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 contest against England.
Athapaththu is currently undergoing treatment for a cramp in her right leg with the Sri Lanka team management confirming that she will be returning to bat in their chase.
The Sri Lanka skipper was seen limping while taking a run during sixth over of Sri Lanka’s chase of 254 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
The Sri Lanka team physio rushed in to tend to the 35-year-old as she lay on her back at the non-striker’s end.
Soon afterwards, with the game on a stoppage and Athapaththu unable to continue, the Sri Lanka captain was stretchered off the pitch. The batter was unbeaten on seven when she was taken off the field.
Sri Lanka and England are currently playing their third game at the ongoing Cricket World Cup, with England eyeing a third straight win while the hosts look for their first triumph. (ICC)
