Claiming that she emphasized three years ago that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLPP) would be destroyed if aligned with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), former President Chandrika Kumaratunge said what she said three years ago had become a reality today.

In a Facebook post, she said she stressed the need to take forward the party by standing independent while strengthening it.

"We emphasized that SLFP will be demolished if it would join with SLPP. What I said three years ago has become a reality today. Even SLFPers admit that now. Leaders of our party joined the SLPP purely due to power greed. They have no love for the party. They are not far-sighted. What they had only the hunger for power," she said.

Ms. Kumaratunge said she had never resigned from the party and that she was still a patron of the SLFP.

"However, I have not been invited to any of the meetings or discussions of the SLFP after June, 2018. I was shamelessly removed as the organiser for the Attanagalla electorate where my father, mother, brother and myself have represented for over 85 years. I was removed because I voiced for the betterment of the party, The only offence we committed was to object to the move to join SLPP without any legal approval from the party while 90% of the party organisers were against to it," she said.

She said the SLFP leaders are also part of every wrongdoing of the Government and added that they cannot get away from it.

Ms. Kumaratunge said if SLFP leaders had some respect, they should resign from their positions and hand over the party to policy-driven youth who really loved the party.

"These power-hungry leaders can never revive this party. I am not ready to waste my time working with these people," she said.

In the post she also said, she told this to a journalist recently as an answer to a question he raised that there was speculation that SLFP was planning to invite her to join the party again. (Ajith Siriwardana)
