Nearly 100 people gathered on the streets of Kohuwala today to mark a silent protest against the economic failure caused by the government and the struggles which had severely affected daily lives.

Protestors gathered with candles and lamps, and held slogans calling on politicians to stop playing with people's lives.

"We were inconvenienced by prolonged power cuts and then a few of us got together and held a peaceful demonstration," said Shabeer Mohamed, one of the organizers of the public protest told Daily Mirror.

"None of us are affiliated to any political organization. This is an independent demonstration," he said.

While the numbers gradually grew, protestors said every fuel station around the Kohuwala Junction had a queue.

"Rulers are playing with people’s lives. People cannot bear daily expenses anymore. We see how people suffer as they cannot make ends meet. People commit suicide since they cannot provide food to the family. What we see in movies has become a reality today," one of the protestor's said.

"The rulers have misled the public for 74 years and that needs to stop now. They are now trying to find excuses and blame it on the pandemic. But there are many countries that have overcome severe crises. Otherwise there should be power cuts in every country," another protestor said.

One minister said that no country provides electricity on all 365 days. These are the kind of fairy tales that the rulers are telling people, the protestor's said in disgust.
