Colombo, May 14 (Daily Mirror) - Water levels in several major river basins have begun to recede following reduced rainfall over the past 24 hours, the Irrigation Department said.

Director of the Hydrology and Disaster Management Division L.S. Sooriyabandara said water levels in the Nilwala Ganga, Gin Ganga, Kalu Ganga and Attanagalu Oya river basins are gradually decreasing.

He said that water levels are falling in most areas, except at Millakanda on the Kalu Ganga, where levels remain high.

However, Sooriyabandara warned that the improvement could be temporary, as the Department of Meteorology has forecast further rainfall in the coming days.

He also said that 18 of the country’s 73 major reservoirs are currently spilling water, while another 18 medium-sized reservoirs are also discharging water.
