Colombo, June 20 (Daily Mirror) - Batticaloa District MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam has criticised the National People’s Power (NPP) for allegedly assisting the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP) to gain control of the Vakarai Pradeshiya Sabha.
The TMVP, led by former State Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, widely known as ‘Pillayan,’ is a controversial political group, with its leader currently in remand custody over the 2006 abduction and disappearance of a university vice chancellor in the Eastern Province.
Taking to social media platform ‘X’, MP Rasamanickam accused the NPP of betraying its principles by supporting the TMVP candidate to secure the Chairman’s post, defeating the Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) candidate in the process.
“Today’s events at the Vakarai council have made it clear that the NPP lacks consistent principles or policies. NPP members supported the candidate from Pillayan’s TMVP, helping them secure the Chairman position, defeating the ITAK candidate,” Rasamanickam stated.
