Colombo, June 13 (Daily Mirror) - Prime Minister has assured swift action to address issues affecting Sri Lanka’s indigenous Vedda community, including safeguarding their traditional land rights, following a meeting with indigenous leader at Parliament yesterday (12).
During the discussion, Uru Warige Wannila Aththo highlighted the difficulties faced by indigenous people in accessing and utilizing their ancestral lands. In response, the Prime Minister emphasized that the indigenous community has the right to use and enjoy its traditional lands without obstruction and stated that the necessary legal measures to protect these rights would be expedited.
The indigenous leader also drew attention to the plight of residents in Hennanigala who were affected by the recent Cyclone Ditwah, noting that many families had yet to receive relief assistance. The Prime Minister immediately instructed relevant officials to ensure that affected families receive the necessary support without delay.
The meeting also focused on challenges faced by Dambana School. Prime Minister Amarasuriya acknowledged the concerns raised and assured that the matter would be examined and appropriate measures taken to address the school's needs.
The discussion formed part of the government's ongoing efforts to address the concerns of indigenous communities and improve their living conditions while protecting their cultural heritage and traditional rights.
