Colombo, May 6 (Daily Mirror) - President Anura Kumra Dissanayake could face an impeachment motion for inflicting influence on judges though remarks made on impending judgements, the opposition said today.

Opposition MP Dayasiri Jayasekera told a media briefing that the President could face an impeachment motion for trying to inflict influence on judges through his comments on May Day.

“President by talking of judgments is inflicting influence on judges. He is actually trying to influence the judges to deliver judgements according to his likes. This kind of action pushes judges into difficulty. They would be compelled to deliver judgements for their survival. Accordingly it is a clear case of interfering with the judiciary. Therefore the President could face an impeachment motion,” the MP said.

MP Jayasekera also referred to a news item in a state newspaper where it has said there will be a number of verdicts on former Ministers. “How could one publish such news items?” he questioned.

MP Chamara Sampath Dassanayake who also referred to the matter during his speech in the House said he would not retain any lawyer for the court cases against him which are pending. “ There is no point spending for lawyers when judgements are predetermined,” the MP said.
