Colombo, June 20 (Daily Mirror) - The Sri Lanka Police announced that a programme to remove unauthorized equipment and illegal modifications from vehicles will be reintroduced starting July 1.

According to Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police for Traffic Control and Road Safety, Indika Hapugoda, the operation would target modifications such as high-intensity headlights, loudspeakers, and metal poles, which are often added without proper authorization.

DIG Hapugoda noted that these alterations pose serious dangers to road users, particularly during accidents.

“In 2024 alone, 815 pedestrians lost their lives in road accidents. Last year, around 800 motorcyclists and pillion riders between the ages of 18 and 28 were killed. In addition, this year, the Motor Traffic Department identified 8,788 vehicles as unfit for use on public roads,” he stated.
