Colombo, August 7 (Daily Mirror) - The Opposition announced plans to submit a no-confidence motion (NCM) against Deputy Defence Minister Aruna Jayasekera on Monday, warning that further disclosures will be made if he refuses to resign.

Speaking at a media conference, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Mujibur Rahman said the motion aims to ensure an impartial investigation into the 2019 Easter Sunday bomb attacks. He urged the Deputy Minister to step down to facilitate a transparent and credible inquiry.

“President Anura Kumara Dissanayake himself has acknowledged the challenge of investigating the Easter Sunday bomb attacks, particularly when members of the current government may be implicated. It is only proper that the Deputy Minister resigns to ensure a fair probe,” MP Rahman said.

He emphasised that the no-confidence motion is a joint Opposition initiative and confirmed it will be formally handed over on Monday.

Joining the briefing, MP Kavinda Jayawardene called on Deputy Ministers to follow the precedent set by former Ministers Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe and Ravi Karunanayake, both of whom resigned when faced with similar no-confidence motions.

The main allegation against the Deputy Minister is his failure while being the Eastern Commander of the Sri Lanka Army, to prevent the activities of suicide bomber Zaharan who led the Easter Sunday bomb attacks.
