The National People’s Power (NPP) has secured the post of Chairman of the Medawachchiya Pradeshiya Sabha, while the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) claimed the Deputy Chairman position following a vote held today.

Although the NPP emerged as the leading party at the recent Local Government election for the Medawachchiya Pradeshiya Sabha, it fell short of securing an outright majority.

The NPP won 10 seats, while the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) obtained 6 seats. Both the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and the Sarvajanabala Party secured 2 seats each, with one seat going to an independent group.

With no party holding a clear majority, the council required support from at least one other member to form its administration. A secret ballot was conducted during the inaugural meeting to elect the key office-bearers.

At the vote, Dhanapala Wimalathunga of the NPP was elected as Chairman, while Rangana Somadasa of the SLPP was chosen as Deputy Chairman.
