Missing elephant ‘Sumedha’ spotted at Minneriya National Park

Habarana, June 11 (Daily Mirror) - ‘Sumedha’, the elephant that went missing after a road accident in Galapitagala, Maradankadawala on March 7, has been spotted in the Minneriya National Park, officials confirmed.

A spokesperson for the National Park told the Daily Mirror that the elephant, believed to be Sumedha, was sighted yesterday (10).

Sumedha disappeared after colliding with a lorry. Following the incident, an extensive search operation was carried out jointly by the Special Task Force and wildlife officers.

During the incident, one of the elephant’s tusks was detached. It has since been recovered and is being stored securely by the Department of Wildlife Conservation.

The spokesperson said that the elephant appeared to be in good health.
