Colombo, May 14 (Daily Mirror) - Health authorities have assured that the viral meningitis situation reported among schoolchildren in Deniyaya is currently under control, while surveillance and preventive measures continue in the area.
Speaking to Daily Mirror, Dr. Palitha Karunapema said there is no indication of a major outbreak at present.
“The situation is under control. We are continuously monitoring developments and all necessary preventive measures have already been taken,” he said.
Dr. Karunapema noted that a total of 47 students had initially been suspected of contracting the infection, of which 15 cases have so far been confirmed as viral meningitis.
He further stated that samples from the remaining students have been sent for further laboratory analysis.
According to the Chief Epidemiologist, six students are currently receiving treatment at the Deniyaya Hospital.
As a precautionary measure to prevent further spread among schoolchildren, several schools in the Deniyaya Education Zone were temporarily closed earlier this week.
However, the schools reopened later.
Viral meningitis is an inflammation of the lining surrounding the brain and spinal cord, commonly caused by viruses, particularly non-polio enteroviruses. Symptoms typically include fever, headache, stiff neck and sensitivity to light, although most patients recover fully within seven to 10 days.
