Max. retail price for 500mg Paracetamol tablets announced

An extra ordinary gazette notification was issued announcing the maximum retail price for 500mg paracetamol tablets to Rs. 2.30.

The gazette notification (2269/11) was issued on February 28 following instructions from the Health Minister, Keheliya Rambukwella.

Further on this, the maximum retail price of Paracetamol Tablets should be applicable to all the brands that carry the generic name 'Paracetamol.'

The manufacturers, importers, traders, distributors, pharmaceutical suppliers, medical practitioners, dentists, veterinary surgeons, medical institutions, including private medical institutions, vendors or individuals who are in possession of 500mg of Paracetamol tablets for the purpose of selling them, should not sell the tablets above the maximum retail price, the gazette notifies.

The gazette notification further says that every person or institution that sells or offers to sell Paracetamol Tablets should issue a receipt clearly indicating the appropriate brand name and the price of each Tablet.

Any manufacturer or importer is given clear instructions that he/she should print or mark on the commercial package or label of Paracetamol Tablets and indicate the maximum retail price, it said. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
