Colombo, March 20 (Daily Mirror) - A special islandwide sales promotion campaign offering discounts of up to 40% on essential goods was launched today (20) by Lanka Sathosa, targeting relief for consumers ahead of the Sinhala and Hindu New Year season.

The programme, introduced under the theme “Satosin Piri Yusho Siri,” covers around 600 essential items available across the state-run retail network. In addition to discounted prices, customers spending over Rs. 2,500 will receive a coupon, with winners eligible for prizes including a BAW electric car, electric scooters, furniture sets, and smartphones through a raffle draw scheduled for the end of April.

The initiative was announced at a press conference held at the Lanka Sathosa head office under the patronage of Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Safety and Cooperative Development Wasantha Samarasinghe, with the participation of Lanka Sathosa Chairman Ravindra Fernando and several suppliers.

Addressing the media, Minister Samarasinghe said the programme aims to ease the financial burden on the public during the festive season, especially amid ongoing economic challenges. He noted that preparations made in advance have ensured the availability of goods without shortages while maintaining prices below market rates.

He further stated that Lanka Sathosa’s network of nearly 430 outlets will continue offering goods at concessionary prices throughout the festive period, as part of broader government efforts to provide relief to the public.

Responding to concerns about possible hoarding and misuse of the promotion, the Minister said purchasing limits have been imposed on certain items based on consumer buying patterns to ensure fair distribution and prevent exploitation.

Suppliers participating in the programme also expressed support for the initiative, while the Lanka Sathosa Chairman extended appreciation to partners and invited more suppliers to join future efforts.

The campaign comes as part of continued measures by the government to stabilize prices and improve access to essential goods during the upcoming New Year season.
