The Public Health Inspectors' Union (PHIU) insisted that the Government should impose strict travel restrictions in order to prevent the country from plunging into a major catastrophe in terms of the Delta variant of COVID-19.
PHIU Head Upul Rohana said the situation on the ground is extremely critical and precarious.
“It seems that the Government does not have a clear-cut strategy to keep COVID at bay, as we see some responsible people in the Government are just beating around the bush on the spread of highly contagious Delta variant in the country,” he said.
He warned that if the daily cases go past 3,500, the health sector would be badly handicapped and the situation will reach the toughest stage and will spill out of control.
“Thus, it is of utmost importance to impose strict travel restrictions sooner before the situation goes out of hand,” the PHIU Head added.
Moreover, he said although many are trying to toe the line, crowds are still seen in supermarkets, parks, and public places ignoring health guidelines and practices.
He proceeded to say eight PHIs have been infected with COVID-19 in recent days and added a fair number of officials in the health sector also contract the virus daily. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
