Claiming that the Hospital network in the country is at grave risk of being crippled, former Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Nihal Abeysinghe today urged the Government to impose a two-week lockdown. Failing which, not only the Covid mortality but deaths due to other diseases would become inevitable, he warned.

He told a news conference convened by the National Peoples’ Power that health sector employees were getting infected with the coronavirus which is in the verge of paralysing the hospital network soon.

He said 50% of the patients who seek medical treatment at the Out Patients Departments (OPD) in most of the hospitals have been confirmed Covid positive and that could leave the health sector employees in danger.

He said the Government that was elected by the people, should have the responsibility to save its people from death. (Ajith Siriwardana)
