Colombo, May 4 (Daily Mirror) - A routine boat trip turned into a scene of high tension recently when MP Ramanathan Archchuna reportedly refused to wear a mandatory life jacket, leading to a fierce confrontation with fellow passengers and boat operators.
The incident, captured on video and widely circulated, began when the boat operator requested all passengers to don their life jackets before departure for safety reasons. While all other passengers complied, the MP allegedly refused, claiming he knew how to swim and therefore did not require one. This refusal caused a significant delay, leaving other passengers waiting in the sun for nearly half an hour.
As the delay persisted, frustrations boiled over. One passenger, clearly agitated by the holdup, confronted the MP, accusing him of being "arrogant" and indifferent to the safety protocols and the time of others. The passenger told the MP that the rules were for everyone’s safety, regardless of their swimming ability or social standing.
The MP, however, remained defiant, at one point suggesting that those who couldn't swim should be the only ones required to wear jackets. He even reportedly told the frustrated passengers they could "swim across" if they were in such a hurry. The exchange grew increasingly personal, with the MP using derogatory terms toward the passengers and making references to political and regional differences.
In response, passengers pointed out that as a public representative, the MP should be setting an example of law-abiding behavior rather than flouting safety regulations. They argued that his actions were not only a safety risk but also a display of entitlement. "You are sent to Parliament to represent and respect the people, not to look down on them," one passenger was heard saying in the footage.
MP Archchuna was later seen wearing a life jacket, after which boat operators were able to proceed with the journey.
