Group of MPs to petition President

Colombo, May 5 (Daily Mirror) - Around 25 MPs representing various parties in the opposition is to send in a petition to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake asking him to respect the Judiciary and uphold its independence. 

They have referred to the remark made by President Dissanayake asking the people to get ready to cheer a court verdict which is pending on May 25, 2026. 

The MPs who have signed the petition, including Sajith Premadasa, Dilith Jayaweera, Rohitha Abeywardena, Chamara Sampath Dassanayake, Gayantha Karunatilaka, Imran Maharoof,  Ranjith Madduma Bandara, Hesha Withanage, Harshana Rajakaruna,  Nizam Kariappar, Rauff Hakeem, Hector Appuhamy, Ajith P. Perera, S.M. Marikkar, Rohana Bandara, Sujeewa Senasinghe and Dilip Wedaarachchi have requested the President to withdraw the statement he had made.
