Colombo, March 31 (Daily Mirror) - The government has paid special attention to enhancing facilities and undertaking development activities at the Jaffna International Airport (JIA), also known as Palali Airport.
Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation Minister Bimal Ratnayake recently conducted an inspection of the JIA. During his visit, he held discussions with staff from all departments, inquired about existing facilities and assured that the government will provide the necessary guidance and support to improve and develop all areas of the airport.
Following the meeting, the Minister, whike addressing the media, said that there is growing demand from both local and foreign tourists to use the Palali Airport, which is already designated as an international airport.
"Particularly for travellers from Jaffna who currently arrive at Katunayake Airport, we aim to enhance Palali Airport to better serve them. To facilitate this, Sri Lankan aviation laws may need to be amended to accommodate domestic flights. Many steps are required for the development of the Palali Airport, and the Airport Authority has plans in place for this.
"The development of the Palali Airport will serve as a stepping stone for rebuilding the economy of the Jaffna community, which has been affected by the war. According to the airport chairman, sufficient funds are available for these development activities. The airport must be upgraded to international standards as soon as possible.
"To achieve this, two key improvements are necessary: extending the runway and constructing a suitable terminal to ensure safe passenger travel. This development must proceed with a feasibility study and well-structured business plans. We aim to begin this work very soon," the Minister said.
