Colombo, June 24 (Daily Mirror) - As part of the “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative, a new development project has been proposed to enhance the area surrounding the Nelumwewa hot springs in Welikanda, Polonnaruwa, with the aim of promoting it as a tourist attraction, the President’s Media Division (PMD) announced.

A discussion on the proposed development was held at the site this morning (24), followed by a field inspection by relevant officials and stakeholders.

Despite its potential, the Nelumwewa hot springs have remained largely underdeveloped, resulting in limited interest from both local and foreign tourists. During the discussion, officials highlighted the importance of upgrading the site, not only for its tourism value but also for its scientific significance.

Among the proposals currently under consideration are plans to increase forest cover in the surrounding area, beautify the nearby island, and construct a bridge connecting the mainland to the island, thereby improving accessibility and enhancing the overall visitor experience.

Authorities hope the project will help unlock the site's natural and ecological appeal while contributing to regional tourism development. Further evaluations and approvals are expected to follow in the coming weeks.
