Colombo, May 8 (Daily Mirror) - Health authorities have ruled out the risk of a major viral meningitis outbreak in Deniyaya for now, while continuing to closely monitor the situation following a rise in suspected infections among schoolchildren.

Speaking to Daily Mirror, Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Palitha Karunapema said a total of 47 students have been suspected of infection so far, but only 15 cases have been confirmed as viral meningitis.

“Samples from the remaining students have been sent for further laboratory testing,” he noted.

The Chief Epidemiologist further said six students are currently receiving treatment at the Deniyaya Hospital and that all necessary preventive measures have already been taken to contain the spread.

“There is no indication of a large-scale outbreak at this stage, but we are continuously monitoring the situation,” he said.

However, several schools in the Deniyaya Education Zone have temporarily been closed as a precautionary measure to prevent further spread among schoolchildren.

Accordingly, all schools in the zone had been instructed to remain closed yesterday (7) and today (8).

Viral meningitis is a common, often mild, inflammation of the brain and spinal cord lining (meninges) caused by viruses, particularly non-polio enteroviruses. It typically causes fever, headache, stiff neck, and sensitivity to light, with most people recovering fully in 7–10 days.

Common symptoms of viral meningitis include high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, photophobia (light sensitivity), drowsiness, confusion, and nausea/vomiting.
