Colombo, June 23 (Daily Mirror) - The Court of Appeal today issued an interim order suspending the inaugural meeting of the Wanathawilluwa Pradeshiya Sabha, which was scheduled to be held tomorrow (24).
The interim relief was granted by Justice Priyantha Fernando following the consideration of a petition filed by Samantha Munasinghe, group leader of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) for the Wanathawilluwa Pradeshiya Sabha, over alleged irregularities in the allocation of seats under the proportional representation system.
Appearing on behalf of the petitioner, Counsel Saman Galappaththi submitted to Court that the SLPP had been severely and unfairly disadvantaged in the allocation of seats reserved for female representation. He argued that the Returning Officer’s decision to appoint female members to seats gained through proportional representation was in violation of the applicable legal framework.
