Colombo, July 16 (Daily Mirror) - Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith has filed an intervention petition before the Court of Appeal seeking the dismissal of the writ application filed by former State Intelligence Service (SIS) Director Major General (Retired) Suresh Sallay, arguing that the petition could impede the ongoing Criminal Investigation Department (CID) investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday bomb attacks.

In his intervention petition, the Cardinal has requested the Court to reject Sallay’s writ application, maintaining that granting the relief sought could hamper the progress of the CID’s investigations into the Easter Sunday attacks.

Sallay has invoked the writ jurisdiction of the Court of Appeal, challenging the legality of any possible arrest or detention in connection with the ongoing investigations into the coordinated terrorist attacks of April 21, 2019.

Meanwhile, several other parties have filed intervention applications in support of Sallay’s writ petition. They include veteran author Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekera, Ven. Bengamuwe Nalaka Thera, Ven. Dapane Sumanawansha Thera, Ven. Dimbulagala Rahulalankara Thera, Senior Consultant Dr. Sakunthala Senevirathna and the Global Sri Lankan Forum.

The intervening parties are seeking leave to intervene in the proceedings and to be added as party respondents in the case.

The Court of Appeal is scheduled to consider all intervention applications when the matter is taken up on July 17.
