COVID deaths continue to rise in coming weeks: Ministry

The COVID-19 related deaths could remain at the current rate which is around 180 in coming weeks as well, though active cases might fall, Deputy Director General of Health Services Dr. Hemantha Herath said.

He told media that the deaths at present are of positive patients who were diagnosed with the virus two or three weeks ago.

“Accordingly, there could more deaths in coming weeks. In contrast, there could be a slight decrease in the number of infections,” he said.

Dr. Herath proceeded to say that the country is experiencing the repercussions of what they have been doing irresponsibly and negligently.

Meanwhile, he said three doctors, a nurse and three hospital staffers involved in COVID-19 treatment process have so far succumbed to the virus.

“However, this is what we have been told. There could be more deaths among health workers,” he added.

Sri Lanka yesterday (19) recorded its highest daily COVID deaths and infections which was 186 and 3,793 respectively.
