Colombo, June 18 (Daily Mirror) - The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) informed Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali Jayathunga today that an investigation has been launched into individuals who allegedly attempted to spread false information regarding President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s official visit to Germany.
The complaint was filed by G. Subash Chaminda Roshan, an Additional Secretary to the President.
According to investigators, the false claim which alleged that the President met with a former LTTE leader while on his German tour, had been publicly stated by former Minister Udaya Gammanpila during a media briefing. The statement was then widely disseminated through various media outlets and across the internet.
The officers further stated that the alleged statement was made with the intention of discrediting the President and causing embarrassment to the government.
After reviewing the submissions, the Chief Magistrate ordered the CID to submit the progress of the investigation to court without delay.
