The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has confirmed that the recent suicide of Charith Dilshan, a student of the Sabaragamuwa University, was the result of ragging by senior students.
The 24-year-old student took his own life on April 29 after reportedly leaving behind a letter. Following extensive investigations, the CID ruled out depression or other personal mental health issues as contributing factors, affirming that ragging was the cause of the tragedy.
Several senior students suspected of involvement in the incident have since been arrested and are currently in remanded custody pending further legal proceedings.
Investigating officers have also recorded statements from multiple parties, including university administrators, as part of the ongoing inquiry.
The incident has once again drawn public attention to the long-standing issue of ragging in Sri Lankan universities, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of anti-ragging laws and reforms within higher education institutions.
