At least 23 injured after private bus overturns near Nuwara Eliya

At least 23 people were injured in a late-night accident in the Toppass area along the Nuwara Eliya–Kandy main road, when a private bus overturned around 11:45 p.m., police said.

The bus, which was carrying 54 individuals including the driver, was enroute from Nuwara Eliya to Kandy when it veered off the road and overturned. The group was returning from a leisure trip from Kurunegala to Badulla at the time of the incident.

Among the injured are 20 women and three men, including the bus driver and conductor. All injured passengers were admitted to the Nuwara Eliya District General Hospital for treatment.

The injured individuals are residents of Kiriwaula, Kurunegala.

Nuwara Eliya Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
