The Transport Ministry had informed the relevant authorities to extend the granting of vehicle leasing instalment relief for buses for another six months, Transport State Minister, Dilum Amunugama yesterday said
He said the decision was taken following the request made by private bus associations.
The Private bus associations had earlier informed the Minister that they would be compelled to suspend countrywide private bus operations from November 9 due to lack of passengers following the COVID pandemic.
"These associations have not requested the Ministry for any bus fare hikes. They have only requested the granting of concessions to enable them to continue with their service. If this situation continues to worsen the Ministry will have to find a permanent solution," the Minister said.
All charges relating to log sheets have been suspended by the National Transport Commission (NTC).
However, discussions are underway to provide all necessary subsidies to bus operators during the Covid-19 crisis to enable them to continue with their services, the Minister added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
