9 units to be established in provinces to record evidence of abused minors

The Cabinet has approved to establish 9 units at provincial levels to record evidence of abused children through video technology.

The proposal was submitted by Education Minister Prof. GL Peiris to the Cabinet as a child had to face various problems while giving evidence in public in court.

Accordingly, these facilities are to be established in association with hospitals.

The evidence is to be obtained as video recordings and presented in court during the proceedings.

Such facilities are currently available only in Colombo.
