Twenty two Indian fishermen in five fishing trawlers were taken into custody by the Sri Lanka Navy in the seas off Mannar.

They were arrested near the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) by a naval patrol team deployed by the North-Central Naval Command.

Navy spokesman Commander Kosala Warnakulasuriya said that the Indian fishermen were handed over to the Mannar police for further investigations.

Instances of Indian fishermen entering Sri Lankan waters have become frequent, causing problem for both governments mainly for allegedly poaching in Sri Lanka’s territorial waters.

Sri Lankan fishermen are also arrested by the Indian authorities for crossing the India-Sri Lanka Maritime Boundary or if they are found stranded. (Supun Dias)
