The Department of Railways has stepped up enforcement of the Railway Ordinance, leading to the arrest of 21 drivers who attempted to cross railway level crossings in Padukka while the gates were closed to traffic.
According to Security Superintendent Anura Premaratne, legal action has been initiated against the offenders, which included 19 motorcyclists and two three-wheeler drivers. The arrests were made over the past four months at the Padukka railway level crossing on the Kelani Valley (KV) line.
All suspects were produced before the Homagama Magistrate’s Court and fined Rs. 25,000 each.
Premaratne said that the Railway Ordinance will continue to be strictly enforced to curb the reckless crossing of level crossings, which has often led to fatal accidents.
