Three women killed, one injured in accident in Gampola

A tragic incident occurred in the Doluwa area of Gampola today (06), where three women observing Poya Day were killed in a collision with a motor vehicle.

Police suspect that the accident was caused by the reckless driving of the woman behind the wheel.

The accident involved four elderly women who had been visiting the Doluwa Sri Bimbarama Temple. Around 1:30 p.m., they were walking along the side of the main road on their way to the temple toilets to take alms and attend to their personal hygiene when a motor vehicle approaching from behind struck them and subsequently collided with a nearby lorry.

The force of the collision caused severe injuries, and three of the women died on the spot. The fourth woman was rushed to Kandy National Hospital in critical condition.

The women who died have been identified as 70-year-old Ramanayake Mudiyanselage Podi Menike, 67-year-old Malini Wijesuriya, and 67-year-old Pallegedara Anulawathi, a resident of Gurukele, Gampola.

Police said that the vehicle was being driven by a 36-year-old woman holding a learner’s license. She had come to Gampola with her husband and two children. The car was initially driven by her husband, who later allowed his wife to take the wheel.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the woman accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brakes near the temple, causing the car to surge forward, hit the four women, and crash into the lorry. The lorry was pushed off the road, while the car ultimately came to a stop after hitting an embankment.

The woman driver has been hospitalized and subsequently taken into police custody. Further investigations into the incident are ongoing.
