Suspect dies in police custody in Kosgoda

Colombo, May 2 (Daily Mirror) - A young man who was arrested with drugs yesterday, died while in the custody of the Kosgoda police this afternoon.

The victim Tharindu Siriwardene De Soysa (27) was a resident of Hataramanhandiya in Kosgoda.

His parents told the media that he had been arrested on the previous day on suspicion of possessing illegal drugs.

Police said the suspect who was taken ill suddenly yesterday afternoon died on admission to hospital.

His father Nimal Siriwardene De Soysa said the police had severely manhandled his son until he died.

Elpitiya SSP Luckie Jayawardene who visited the Balapitiya Base Hospital to look into the incident said a formal investigation will be held in this regard and action taken against the police officers, if any, involved in the incident.

What's going on! Does the Constitution or Law provide for the Police to manhandle those taken into custody? The worst part is those involved are punished by merely being transferred. The Minister in charge should pay serious attention to such acts.

Ensure all suspects are interrogated in a room with recordable CCTV’s with sound technology. Also, the officers doing the investigations and interrogations must wear body cams which also should have sound technology. This will safeguard against any possible criminal intentions of the suspect or the police whilst in custody.

The police are innocent. They had nothing to do with this man's death. He was a very healthy human being who suddenly collapsed and died for no detectable reason.
