Kotugoda grid substation shut down amid severe flooding: CEB

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) announced that the Kotugoda 220/132/33kV Grid Substation has been temporarily taken out of service due to severe flooding in the area.

According to the CEB, continuous heavy rainfall has caused floodwaters to rise rapidly, resulting in the entire substation premises becoming submerged. By yesterday (29) water levels had reached the control panel height, posing a significant operational risk.

With conditions exceeding safe operating limits, the CEB said it had safely de-energized and switched off the Kotugoda Grid Substation. The measure was taken to ensure public safety, safeguard on-site personnel, and protect critical electrical infrastructure from further damage.

CEB teams are currently monitoring the situation, and restoration work will begin once floodwaters recede and engineers confirm that the substation is safe to operate.

The CEB expressed regret for any inconvenience caused and thanked the public for their patience and cooperation during this emergency.
