Housemaid remanded for stealing over Rs. 13 Mn worth valuables in Colombo

Colombo, April 28 (Daily Mirror) - A young woman who was arrested by the Cinnamon Gardens Police while absconding after allegedly stealing two luxury wristwatches valued at approximately Rs. 13.5 million and 500 Sterling Pounds from a businessman’s residence in Colombo, was ordered to be remanded till May 5 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali.

The suspect, Sivasandaram Sivaranganee, a 23-year-old is a resident of the Maskeliya area.

Cinnamon Gardens Police told court that the suspect had been employed as a domestic aide at the businessman’s residence and had gone on leave on April 9 after four months of service. During her absence, the complainant’s two children, who were residing abroad, had visited the house and were preparing to leave the country again on April 20.

It was during this time, when the businessman sought to present the expensive wristwatches as gifts to his children, that he discovered the items missing. Following this discovery, a complaint was lodged with the Cinnamon Gardens Police.

Investigations revealed that the domestic aide, who had gone on leave, had failed to return to work and was unresponsive to phone calls. After an extensive investigation based on these findings, the suspect was arrested.
