Dr. Shafi, family faced great hardships in regaining honour: Faisz Musthapha PC



Colombo, May 11 (Daily Mirror) - Senior Gynecologist Dr. Shafi Shihabdeen and his family had to face immense hardships to regain the lost honour and their place in society due to the racially motivated political witch hunt, Faisz Musthapha PC said. 

He said the embarrassment and agony Dr. Shafi’s daughter Zinab had to experience even at school was unspeakable and finally justice had prevailed to them when the latter was acquitted on all accounts. 

The President's Counsel who is also the Chancellor of the South Eastern University made these remarks as the special guest while speaking at the launching ceremony of author Ashroff Shihabdeen’s book ‘Dr. Shafi’s Struggle Against Injustice’, at the BMICH. 

Dr. Shafi Shihabdeen presented the first copy of the book to the chief guest of the event Western Province Governor Hanif Yusoof. The event was held under the patronage of Abrar Foundation Chairman Consultant Pediatrician Dr. Rayees Mustafa and Dr. Shafi’s daughter Zinab Shafi delivered the welcome address. 

Dr. Shafi, speaking at the launch, thanked the Muslim community and friends and relations who conducted prayers and fasting over his arrest during the difficult period and recalled how he was arrested by some racist politicians even without him committing any crimes. 

Former Ravaya journalist Nimal Abeysinghe who authored a book titled ‘Garbhasha Yuddaya’ (The Womb War) in line with Dr. Shafi’s injustice was specially honoured at the event. 

Former representative of Sri Lanka to the UN A.L.A. Azeez reviewed the book and Open University Visiting Lecturer Sumaiya Sherifudeen also addressed the gathering. A documentary was screened about Dr. Shafi's struggle during that period. 

A distinguished gathering of the Muslim community was present at the event including special guests, Member of Parliament Mujibur Rahman, All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama Secretary Ash Sheik Arkam Nooramith, former Western Province Governor Azath Salley, former MP Ishak Rahuman, Thinakaran Chief Editor Senthil Velavar, representatives of Muslim organizations, authors, friends and family members of Dr. Shafi also graced the occasion.
