Association of Medical Specialists says No to GMOA strike

Colombo, Jan. 22 (Daily Mirror) - Association of Medical Specialists (AMS) has clarified that its members will not participate in any reported trade union action planned by the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA), which is expected to commence islandwide tomorrow, January 23, 2026.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the AMS said it had taken note of reliable media reports indicating that the GMOA is planning a Trade Union Action (TUA), but emphasized that specialist doctors attached to the AMS will continue to perform their professional duties as usual.

“The Association of Medical Specialists wishes to clearly inform the general public, health authorities, and all relevant stakeholders that AMS members are not involved in any such Trade Union Action and will ensure uninterrupted specialist healthcare services to the public,” the statement said.

The AMS further expressed strong opposition to any actions that could delay, obstruct, or reverse the Government’s ongoing efforts to address long-standing grievances of medical specialists. It warned that such setbacks could negatively impact the stability of the specialist workforce and compromise the quality of patient care.

Reiterating its position, the AMS said it firmly believes that constructive dialogue and meaningful negotiation are the most effective and responsible methods of resolving professional and service-related issues within the health sector.
