The main opposition has raised a cry of protest that an unusually large entourage has accompanied Number One on his visit to the Dubai conference.
Certain parties who claim to have made inquiries to find the ulterior motive of those crying foul maintain that Diyawanna members from some political groupings account for a sizable section of this large delegation and some of these members have been maintaining a close rapport with the opposition. And these members accompanying Number One on the foreign visit is not to their liking given the possible unwelcome change in the political equation.
The opposition highups have also heard whispers that four or five of these members have already planned to throw in their lot with Number One soon after returning from the Dubai visit.
So some government members say that that the opposition’s protest is motivated by selfinterest and not for any other reason.
Nevertheless, many people who have no political affiliations subscribe to the opinion that an 80-member delegation to a world conference from a poor country like ours is definitely too large and cannot be condoned under any circumstances, they say.

Whether the country is mired in an economic crisis or the government is determined to dispatch 80 individuals, regardless of their qualifications, to Dubai under the pretext of attending the COP28 Conference using public funds, the president bears complete responsibility for this mistake. The rest of the world must be ridiculing us. If the president intended to establish a university focused on climate change, he should have nominated academics from our own universities. These actions are utterly shameless.
