Those who supported the war now demand war crimes inquiry

" The British government knew what was happening, but joined the world leaders to support and supply arms to the Lankan government. Lanka was dragged into the debt trap by world leaders who supported with resources, the war to annihilate Tamil uprising "

The British Prime Minister, speaking at the summit of Commonwealth nations over the weekend, repeated demands for an independent war crimes inquiry and set the deadline for March, before pressing for an international probe under UN auspices.

Of course President Mahinda Rajapaksa refused, and the government suggested an internal arrangement. He lamely insisted that his regime has already started its own inquiries on reconciliation and missing persons, and relief was under way.  These works of the government have been widely criticised for achieving little, even by the supporters of the regime. This was an amusing battle of two rogues; as we know that this Tory leader supported the war of Mahinda, even during the last stages. The British government knew what was happening, but joined the world leaders to support and supply arms to the Lankan government. Lanka was dragged into the debt trap by world leaders who supported with resources, the war to annihilate the Tamil uprising. In addition, Cameron has gone into history with his attack on the British welfare state, particularly against social benefits within the education sector. He used state terror against students who came into streets to protest. When he entered office in 2010, he was committed to the largest programme of public service cuts since 1945. For those reliant on public services and the welfare state to maintain an adequate standard of living, it is a nightmare. However since 2010 Mahinda has beaten the British Tory leader with privatisation and reduction of social welfare. Nevertheless the challenge of Cameron has become a shot in the belly of the fascistic government. Lamentations of the government shows that.

" When requested to host the 1983 meeting in Colombo, President Jayewardene turned down the offer saying he could not justify the excessive expenditure to host the meeting in Colombo. "

In 2011, the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) accepted the offer by the Mahinda regime to host the 2013 CHOGM in Colombo. On an earlier occasion when requested to host the 1983 meeting in Colombo, President Jayewardene turned down the offer saying he could not justify the excessive expenditure to host the meeting in Colombo. Many on the government side too are concerned about the expenditure. The expenditure incurred by the Government in order to host the summit could become an overwhelming economic burden on the people of this country. While the Government claimed to host a summit on behalf of an organisation that extols the values of Democracy, Human Rights and Good Governance, there has been no transparency regarding the expenditure incurred by the state for this purpose. The Mahinda regime has not only far exceeded the original expenditure estimates, but has been tight lipped about the numerous contracts and favours granted to its cronies. Rather than use the opportunity for speedy implementation of LLRC recommendations to restore eroded democratic values and express its commitment to peace, the Lankan Government has turned CHOGM 2013 into an extravaganza to blow up the populist image of the Mahinda regime. Hence the decision to select Colombo as a venue for a democratic values based organisation has been opposed by a number of nations and organisations. The absence of free and fair elections, de-valuing of Parliament, restriction of freedom of expression, the suppression of media, the abolition of Independent Commissions relating to the Public Service, Judiciary, Elections and the Police, the illegal removal of Chief Justice Bandaranayake, are real and substantial.

However, the attack against the vehicle of the Leader of opposition as he tried to enter the UNP party headquarters by mobs transported by army and government vehicles while the police looked on, reaffirmed the belief that the government would  not change its despotic tendencies. Ironically, these fascist thugs were protesting against an exhibition organised by ‘Samagi’ a coalition of political parties, trade unions and civil society groups highlighting the need to implement the President’s own LLRC proposals.

This exhibition was labelled as treacherous and the state media has unleashed a vicious campaign against all those who have been involved with the exhibition and they have been labelled as ‘traitors’ and LTTE sympathisers.

It’s not a question of how many brothers are in the cabinet; but a question of whether the   parliament is working. What everyone is fighting for, is  to ensure that democratic institutions are functional. Working masses are coming out slowly.

Perhaps by March, the Mahinda regime may face the challenge of the local mass movement and not Cameron’s inquiry.
