the French Parliament passes historic Assisted Death Bill

Under this new law, adults suffering from an incurable illness with unbearable pain will be legally allowed to end their lives with medical assistance. However, the law comes with strict conditions: approval from 2 doctors, full mental capacity to decide, and repeated requests from the patient.

Why This Matters for Sri Lanka -- With France joining other European nations, the global debate on “death with dignity” has now reached Asia’s doorstep. Arguments IN FAVOuR: 1. Dignity and Autonomy: Patients with terminal illnesses like advanced cancer or ALS who face months of severe pain should have the right to decide when to their own life.

2. Relief from Suffering --  For pain that cannot be controlled even with strong medication, this offers a peaceful and humane option. 3. Relief for Families: Long-term care of bedridden patients places huge emotional and financial burdens on families. This gives them closure.

4. Prevents Illegal Methods: Today some people resort to dangerous, secret methods. Legalising it ensures the process is safe, medical, and supervised.

Arguments AGAINST -- 1. Risk of Misuse: Poor and elderly people could face pressure from family members to “choose” death for financial reasons. 2. Culture and Religion.  Most religions, including Buddhism in Sri Lanka, view life as sacred and do not approve of taking one’s own life.

3. Medical Ethics.   The core duty of a doctor is to “heal”. Assisting death goes against the fundamental principle of the medical profession. 4. Slippery Slope: Once legalised, the criteria could be expanded over time to include mental illness or disabilities.

In Sri Lanka,  it is time to start a national dialogue - with strong safeguards, full parliamentary debate, and agreement from religious leaders. The goal should be to protect human dignity.
