When the government announced an exposition of the sacred Tooth Relic after a lapse of 16 years, it may not have imagined that a mass exodus of people is likely to visit Kandy – a heavily congested city on a usual day and that proper planning is required to curtail the crowds. People kept pouring to Kandy two days prior to the starting date and camped on the streets. Despite mechanisms to monitor the crowds, parking of vehicles etc., the ugly side of mismanagement is quite visible from videos and photos that are being circulated on mainstream media and social media channels. What is disheartening is the amount of garbage that had piled up on the streets, perhaps due to a lapse in garbage disposal strategies or merely due to people’s attitudes. Even though discipline is a fundamental teaching of the Buddha, people visiting Kandy seem to have forgotten the basic teachings in Buddhism in their rush to catch a glimpse of the sacred Tooth Relic. Even though the government subsequently released photos of streets that had been cleaned by volunteers who were deployed to control the situation the majority of the populace is not yet convinced about the capacity of the incumbent government to handle such events of a grand scale. In an attempt to curtail the crowd the Kandy District Secretary requested people to refrain from coming to Kandy as there’s no space to accommodate any additional crowds despite the closing date being two days away. This event gives a lesson on why proper planning is paramount to ensure the convenience of people, especially due to the fact that it is a state event.
