Tractor illegally transporting sand kills sergeant before fleeing

A police sergeant died and another received serious injuries when a suspicious tractor transporting sand knocked them down and sped away at a police check point in Kodikamam.   

Police said the two police officers had visited the location and waited in ambush on information from the public regarding illegal transport of sand. Sergeant Elbert Hettiarachchi (50) died on the spot and the PC was rushed to Chavakachcheri hospital by the residents of the area and transferred to Jaffna Teaching Hospital.

During investigations, the police seized the trishaw which had been left in the jungle away from the scene of the incident.   

Kodikamam Police are conducting further investigations to arrest the absconding driver.
