Ten percent of Sri Lankans suffer from mental illnesses: Ministry



Around 10% of Sri Lanka’s population is affected by various forms of mental illness, the Ministry of Health announced yesterday.  

“Approximately 2% of the population suffers from severe mental health conditions,” Director General of Health Services, Dr. Asela Gunawardena said  

Speaking at the national ceremony to mark World Mental Health Day, Dr. Gunawardena yesterday emphasized that mental health disorders have significantly contributed to the rising number of suicides in the country.
