Sri Lanka is once again being recognized as one of the top beach destinations for 2026. Travel guide Lonely Planet has listed the country’s beaches as perfect for sunbathing, swimming, surfing, and relaxing. The island has over 1,340 km of sandy coastline, offering visitors a wide variety of experiences.
From the lively beaches in the south to quiet coves in the north and east, Sri Lanka has something for every type of traveller. The southwest coast is best visited between November and April, while the east coast is ideal from May to September, 2025.
Some of the most popular beaches include:
Unawatuna Beach – Known for calm waters, good facilities, and its popularity with swimmers and partygoers.
Dalawella Beach – Famous for Frog Rock, a safe lagoon for families, and frequent turtle sightings.
Weligama Beach – Perfect for beginner surfers with gentle waves and sandy shores.

Other beaches worth visiting include Kalkudah in the east, with quiet sands and coconut trees, and Casuarina in the north, known for its natural beauty. Surf enthusiasts can enjoy Arugam Bay, home to famous breaks like Whiskey Point and Crocodile Rock.
Additional attractions include Kalpitiya for kitesurfing, Bentota for family-friendly beaches, and Mawella Beach for total relaxation. With its growing tourism industry, Sri Lanka’s beaches are expected to attract more travellers from around the world in 2026.
