Sri Lankan students clinch top honors at Future Changemakers MUN in Malaysia

The Sri Lankan student delegation, hosted by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Children’s Parliament of Sri Lanka (SUNFO), achieved significant international acclaim at the prestigious Future Changemakers Model United Nations (FCMUN) held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from February 28 to March 1, 2026.

Competing against representatives from 46 countries, the delegation secured the coveted Best Overseas Delegation Award for the Sri Lanka UN Friendship Organization (SUNFO). In a landmark individual achievement, U.G.T. Dhanush Wimaladharma, Prime Minister of the SDG Children’s Parliament and a student of Richmond College, Galle, was crowned Best Delegate. Furthermore, G. Kathyana Perera of Buddhist Ladies’ College, Colombo 07, received an Honourable Mention for her performance during the high-level diplomatic simulations.

The four-member official delegation also included M.G. Kulunu Vimukthi Deepathi of Vidyaloka Vidyalaya, Kadawatha, and Asm. Arham of KM/Zahira College, Kalmunai. The team was accompanied by official guardian Dr. Yuraj Dishantha Perera, G20 Cooperative Ambassador to Russia.

Following the core MUN sessions, the delegation engaged in a series of high-impact diplomatic forums on March 2. This included a high-level dialogue at the Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia with senior officials, including Undersecretary Dr. Muhammad Firdaus bin Azizan and Deputy Director Mr. Pathma Seelan Subramaniam, focusing on cross-border leadership opportunities.

The students also participated in an International Diplomacy Forum at the Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS) Malaysia. The session, titled “Finding Your Voice – Who You Are and Who You Want to Become,” featured a panel of distinguished youth leaders and Commonwealth champions, including Mr. Dinesh Gajendran and Mr. Dhanesh Basil.

Beyond the boardroom, the delegation undertook cultural and industrial visits to the Royal Selangor Centre, the historic Thean Hou Temple, and the iconic Petronas Twin Towers, bridging the gap between heritage and global vision.

The delegation arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) via SriLankan Airlines on March 4, 2026.

This mission underscores SUNFO’s commitment to empowering Sri Lankan youth as impactful global changemakers on the international stage.
